How satellite roof measurement works

Modern satellite measurement combines high-resolution aerial imagery with elevation data to model the roof in three dimensions: footprint, pitch per facet, ridge and valley lines, and total surface area including the slope correction that flat-map tools miss. A roof that measures 2,000 square feet on a flat map is roughly 2,240 square feet of actual surface at a 6/12 pitch and over 2,500 at 9/12. Skipping the pitch correction is the classic way manual estimates come up a full square or two short.

Accuracy, and what to verify on site

For bidding purposes, aerial measurements on typical residential roofs land within a few percent of a tape pull, which is inside the waste factor you carry anyway. The measurements that most affect the order (total squares, ridge and valley footage, predominant pitch) come through reliably. What deserves an on-site check: layers (aerial can't see a second layer under the top one), decking condition, and anything under heavy tree cover.
